Not Gone I promise

Well many who have built before have said how it is a frustrating slow process!!! guess what they are not wrong.

We are still very much moving toward the new build... just need to fix a few minor things on our current house, sell it, pack up and then undertake a minor exercise of moving our small family interstate!

So when I have our first quote back I will fill you in on some of the details..

I have a feeling I am going to have to compromise on some of my "ideas"

What should I compromise on and what should I dig my heels in and demand?? suggestions please

  1. Hi Beck,
Thanks for stopping by 'French Doors' and I hope I can answer your questions. The doors on my blog are from Hume doors (a Victorian company but they may ship) and they are so much cheaper than Corinthian doors. All prices are on their web page. Just google Hume doors and it will come up. As for windows, my opinion is do not compromise on things that can not be changed later. From memory (and don't quote me as the memory is not that good!)timber is roughly 30%more expenisve than aliminium for windows. We went with a 'Mernati' timber window rather than Victorian Ash hardwood which saved some money. Windows were essentail to me. That's what I love about a home so I wouldn't compromise. The Hardie plank products are more expensive up front than the baltic pine boards we have opted for, but our builder agrees they suit timber windows much better and he said they suited the look we were after. My husband was also dead against a hardie plank product....no idea why! I told him that he could be the one to maintain and repaint the weatherboards, which will shrink in the short term and require repainting within a few years! If it is your dream home at least get timber windows quoted. You can always go back to aliminium in the planning/budget stage.
Hope this helps. Look forward to following your progress,
    X Briohny.

  2. Me again,
I was reading your comment on window.
I know timber is lovley but we opted for Aluminium due to spending the past 10 yrs in our old house painting and fixing up window.
Then Aluminium windows are pretty good these days.
I am heading up to our build later today and going to take some update pics of the house, will take a close up of the windows for you.

  3. Thanks Briohny and Mekaela
your advice is really invaluable. I too am a window person and have been very passionate about wooden windows for many years, but I did find the "Trend" double hung and thought it looked pretty good. I have seen it installed in our builders home. My concern is that his home is brick and ours will be weather board. Our other problem is we are building on 25Acres so we can not hide any windows..
They will be a focal part of the build. Right I am going to have a chat with the builder and get a quote for both. Gee not sure if the hubby will be on my side with this one.
